Optical Character Recognition

Imaging refers to the process of converting a paper document into and electronic image.  This can take the form of daily scanning of incoming documents to an organisation or the bulk conversion of historic documents.  Whichever, implementing an effective process makes the conversion far more effective.

As well as the physical scanning of documents, checks have to be made to ensure the quality is acceptable and then the image has to be described in some way so it can be filed.  This may be a manual process or it may include the automatic recognition of characters (OCR).

The resulting image can then be stored in a document management system or in traditional folders.  The value of the image is far higher if the scanning process is linked to document management as all the benefits of filing and retrieval can be applied to it.

In some cases it may be useful to integrate the scanned images into a line of business application either direct or though a document management system.
