Authentication

The most common method to identify yourself when signing onto a computer system is your user name and a password.  Essentially this is only using one method for authentication.  As your user name is easy to guess by colleagues or outsiders your password is the only unique thing that you enter.

There are three primary methods to provide a unique key, something you know (e.g. a password), something about you (e.g. your finger print) and something you own (e.g. a key).  Using two of these methods to authenticate dramatically improves the security level.

Alternative Solutions provides a combination of a password and a security token to provide two factor authentication.  In order to log in you need both your normal password and the token to create a one time password.
